12 Hours

I've been up all night working on a special project. When I returned to Quest Network Services this morning, Kris owner of Quest mentioned that it has been twelve hours since I last posted our sunset over Rogers Park.

Here's to working on the projects that we feel are worthwhile, until they are complete.

Omar Estrada shrine Touhy Park

Pictured above is the shrine of Omar Estrada, who was shot to death sitting on this bench in Touhy Park.

I had the opportunity to meet his family at the shrine this afternoon.

Who is responsible for his murder in Rogers Park?

I'll open this one for the views of our community.

Loyola Medicine - Some bed bugs carry MRSA

Loyola Medicine News Press Release:

BED BUGS WITH MRSA SUPERBUG SUPERBAD NEWS FOR CHICAGO

As if the recent resurgence of bed bugs wasn’t bad enough, Canadian researchers have found some of the little blood-sucking critters carrying methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, the potentially deadly superbug known as MRSA.

Added to that, the researchers also found bed bugs with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, or VRE, another potentially deadly antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

But to make matters worse locally, a recent survey by a national pest-control company has found that Chicago is the fifth-most bed-bug-infested city in the United States.

Blogger Down

Blogger was down for about a day and it looks like two posts on Rogers Park in 1,000 Words were erased in the process.

I will not be accepting comments questioning it as a conspiracy theory or some sort of personal attack because this is not the case. Blogs across the board have experienced the same losses.

I will repost Lightning over Rogers Park and Howard Street, Ashland Avenue & Rogers Avenue today.

Thank you,

And So 'It' Goes

Michael Luckenbach posts a followup to my April 1st, 2011 A Walk Down Howard Street, noting that exactly one month afterwards, the blight remains unresolved.

This is a long story that began for the readers of Rogers Park in 1,000 Words with the maintenance of the Wisdom Bridge Theatre and the demolition of the Lerner Building on Ashland and Howard Street.

During this time everyone has been called into question including, Alderman Joe Moore, Developer Rich Aronson, The Wisdom Bridge Arts Project, former occupants Dev Corp North, the Howard Street SSA and the current property owners.

I've posted a wealth of information in earlier posts and have many currently unpublished documents, but let's view the North of Howard Neighbors Assocation's position on this issue in our community first: http://nhna.blogspot.com/2011/04/and-so-it-goes.html

CHICAGO BULLS’ SIDNEY GREEN VISITS DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED

Chicago, Ill. – Chicago Bulls’ Sidney Green recently visited developmentally disabled children and young adults in Chicago’s Rogers Park community. Green passed out t-shirts and autographed photos to several fans at Alden Village North Health Facility for children and young adults. A power forward, Green played on the Bulls from 1983-1986.

“We have a group of seven guys who watch every Bulls game together and get so excited when cheering on their favorite players. They talk about the good and bad plays for days after,” says Mary Ellen Schweitzer, community liaison.

“When Sidney came in, I knew who he was right away. I told the guys, we should have known the staff was planning something special for us because they kept asking us about the Bulls and our favorite players,” says Lorne Mackey, 31, resident.

“The Bulls are my favorite team, and it was great to have Sidney come and visit on my birthday. It was a great day,” says Sam Galloway, 35, resident.

Recently, Alden Village North underwent a total top-to-bottom renovation. The updated facility provides nearly 100 special needs children and adults with larger bedrooms, increased bathing rooms as well as classroom and programming spaces.

“We try and do lots of outings and trips with our residents; they go to Cubs games, the movies, the Shedd Aquarium and museums, shopping, out to eat, and even the beach. But most of all, our residents love watching Chicago sports. They know the teams, stats and when all the games are on. Basketball playoffs are one of the best times of year here because they get really into the games,” says Janine Ciemny, Administrator, Alden Village North.

Alden Village North offers specialized programs to address the needs of developmentally disabled children and young adults and is located at 7464 N. Sheridan Rd. in Chicago. For more information, call 773.338.0200 or visit http://www.aldenvillagenorth.com/ .
