Taste is a wine shop and European-style grocery in the heart of the burgeoning Jarvis Square neighborhood of Rogers Park. Owned and operated by a close-knit group who is deeply rooted in the European tradition, this little shop maintains a friendly and accessible attitude towards wine. Wine should not intimidate, it should be enjoyed. Taste offers good wine at a good price and a knowledgeable staff of good people.

I can take myself out of Rogers Park and imagine myself in another country, tasting a wine at a vineyard. It has such a unique charm, I can't help but be enamored with the place. The people are very helpful, answering calls and questions non-stop, and assisting you the moment you walk in their door". - Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce on Taste

Madonna della Strada Chapel - Sunday Mass
Loyola University Chicago

Madonna della Strada is Loyola University Chicago's main chapel. It is named after the mother church of the Jesuit Province of Chicago (one of the largest Jesuit provinces). The chapel was built on the lakefront with the waters of Lake Michigan directly at its front doorstep. The church was designed and built at a time when it was anticipated that Lake Shore Drive would be extended and pass directly in front, but that project was abandoned.

Renovation of Madonna della Strada began in July 2006 and concluded in August 2007.

Several chapel churches in Latin America were named after the chapel church in Chicago, as a tribute to Loyola University Chicago Jesuit and student missionaries.

The Madonna Della Strada Chapel is the main chapel on the Lake Shore Campus of Loyola University Chicago. The chapel was designed in the Art Deco Style and opened its doors to the Loyola University Chicago Community in 1938.

Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society - Clark-Devon Hardware's
Bernie Walchak speaks at "Meet the Experts" event
1447 W. MORSE AVENUE CHICAGO, IL. 60626

Come to the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society next Saturday, April 27, to meet Bernie Walchak, longtime owner of neighborhood icon Clark-Devon Hardware. Mr. Walchak will be at the RPWRHS office at 1447 W. Morse from noon - 2 p.m. He will be joined by his sister Shirley Walchak Slutzsky and his son Ken Walchak. The Walchaks will reminisce and answer questions about the store, its history, and their experiences in the neighborhood over the years. This will not be a formal presentation but rather an informal conversation. Drop in any time between noon and 2 pm and join the conversation; stay for whatever length of time you wish. The direction of talk will somewhat be determined by the interests of those who drop by.

Artifacts related to the history of Clark-Devon Hardware and the surrounding area will be on display. Light refreshments will be available. Clark-Devon Hardware was founded in 1924 and has been owned and operated by three successive generations of the Walchak family. The business is a fixture in Rogers Park, with its handsome lighted clock on the corner of the building. Bernie Walchak has lived in the Rogers Park area for all of his 88 years. He has been associated with Clark-Devon Hardware for his whole life and still works there several mornings each week. This get-together with the Walchaks marks the first program in our "Meet the Experts" series. On selected Saturdays, persons knowledgeable about an aspect of neighborhood history will be invited to spend a couple hours at our museum to chat and answer questions about their area of expertise. The series will feature some of the Society's own experts as well as people from the community.

Bed Bugs in Rogers Park

In July of 2011, when two of my Rogers Park friends brought up personal bed bug stories in their buildings,  I decided to elaborate on how wide-spread these pests have become in our community. This is the 2013 follow-up.

In in a previous article I documented a quick search of The Bed Bug Registery that produced reports of over 30 incidents within Rogers Park's borders. Many of these incidences ranged from isolated conditions such as "getting bedbugs from a used couch" to multiple reports, repeated sightings and refusal of landlord to call exterminators.

What can we do about it?

Clark-Devon Hardware assembled a collection of tried and true products and equipment that can help eliminate bed bugs that involves using the least toxic products for your environment. "While this approach will use chemicals, it will also involve sealing cracks and crevices, vacuuming, applying heat/dry-vapor steam, sealing up mattresses and other non-chemical measures. Ask our knowledgeable staff for recommendations in helping you control this problem".

The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce recently met with A-Plus and Plus Natural Solutions Worldwide at the Chicago Center for Green Technology, and covered "pine based chemicals to assist in getting rid of pests that won't harm you or your pets. They also have a nice mattress cover that traps bed bugs and kills them. It's even machine washable, for those who struggle with non-machine washable items".

Seryn - Hailing from one of the most artistically creative music communities (“Best Music Scene of '08” -Paste Magazine) around, Seryn calls Denton, Texas home. Seryn, having only played together since March of '09, have created something truly special in their short existence. Using guitar, ukulele, kalimba, accordion, bass, drums, viola, percussion and more, the five members work together to create sonorous harmonies and big choruses. Seryn’s understanding of dynamics shines brightly and has earned them a sound that is not easily defined, but proven triumphant. Denton Record-Chronicle recently refferred to Seryn's live show at an Art Gallery as being "so dynamic that you could feel the key changes in your feet, through Festival Hall’s concrete floor."

"This Denton outfit is one of the buzziest bands in the region. Thanks to folk-flecked compositions and powerful harmonies, Seryn is fast becoming a must-see." - Fort Worth Star-Telegram

"Watching Seryn perform, it's hard to convince yourself that those crystalline, multi-part harmonies are pre-recorded or some kind of sleight of ear. Ferociously skilled and preparing a full-length debut for release later this year, Seryn's is a name you will hear over and over (and over) again in the months to come."- Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Seryn's SXSW Show

SAM LUNA - "I was born in a small town on the Navajo and Hopi reservation called Tuba City, went to school in Las Cruces New Mexico, moved back to Tuba City at the age of fifteen and then moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18.

I started this journey in the attempt to write a book about love and life and the pursuit of happiness. I realized though that at the age of twenty-one I had not lived enough life to take on such a project. So I began to travel again, along the way the things I wrote turned into poems more than anything else so I just continued writing poetry to document my path. When I got to Kenosha Wisconsin at the age of 23 I met some truly inspirational musicians that helped me begin to perform my poetry. The reaction I received encouraged me to hit the road again and share my words with as many people as possible.

I returned to the Midwest and finally decided to pick up the guitar and turn my words into song. I was always scared and thought I could never be as good as the musicians that I listened to every day. I realized that was the thing that holds all of us back. So in an effort to encourage others to believe in themselves I began to believe in myself. I played my first show three days after picking up the guitar and I haven’t stopped since".

HEADS UP

Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce Fresh Start Monday at the site of the former Adelphi Theater (7070-78 N. Clark Street).

The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce was founded in April of 2009 with one goal: to help struggling small businesses, and in fact, all businesses, to become successful. Chamber founder Bill Morton wasn't sure how exactly to do this, but he knew that he would do what it takes to succeed.

The Chamber struggled it's first two years, but in December of 2011, the Chamber and all of it's members started taking large strides to turn the Chamber into the vision they saw.

Chamber Founder and President Bill Morton came up with the idea of a neighborhood clean-up in support of the businesses. Eventually, the program that was created was Fresh Start Monday, an event that occurs the first and third Monday of the month from April through to November, weather pending.

The next Fresh Start Monday will be on May 6th, 2013 at the site of the former Adelphi Theater (7070-78 N. Clark Street).
This is a public event from 6 pm - 7 pm. RSVP calls to (773) 850-0049 and walk-ins are OK. This is a free community event.
