Literacy Volunteers of Illinois Scrabble event

Literacy Volunteers of Illinois (LVI) to Host 11thAnnual SCRABBLE for Literacy Challenge

Literacy Volunteers of Illinois (LVI) will be hosting the 11th Annual SCRABBLE for Literacy Challenge on Sunday, November 2, 2014. The event will be held at the Grossinger Honda Center, 6600 N. Western Ave. Chicago, IL 60645, from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.

The event will support the fight against low literacy in Illinois and the potential joblessness, homelessness and incarceration that can result.

“The SCRABBLE Tournament is designed to raise the visibility of the issue as well as to raise funds to support our work with families and individuals in need. Low literacy is an issue that affects every aspect of our community though it is often one of the least visible,” says Dorothy Miaso, Executive Director of LVI.

Attendees will have three options of SCRABBLE play at the event:
  • Compete one-on-one to become the Chicago SCRABBLE champion! Official SCRABBLE rules will apply but ‘Rule Breakers’ can be purchased. Prizes awarded to first, second and third place.
  • Set your own rules and play open games with your friends.
  • Play in an official North American SCRABBLE Players Association tournament! Must be a NASPA member; register at www.cross-tables.com.
Food and beverages will be served throughout the afternoon, along with a Silent Auction, a Raffle Contest and Prizes & Games giveaways! Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for teens.

To register for the event, visit www.lvillinois.org.

The Fish Keg

The Fish Keg - www.TheFishKeg.com

I have been spending more time visiting The Fish Keg, and have recently tried catfish for the first time, with their breaded Cajun Catfish ... delicious! Here is some more on Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce member, The Fish Keg:

"The Fish keg has a wide variety of Seafood, readily cooked for you or to take home yourself and prepare. Everything is priced by the pound, so you can order the amount that's right for you. We recommend a half pound for a light meal, try three quarters of a pound to fill you up, or if you're feeling hungrier than usual the SKIES THE LIMIT. We will cook it up hot and fresh right in front of you, and it usually only takes about five Minutes or less.

We have a wide variety of Seafood in the store, but we are limited by space. With a half days' notice or a call before 9 A.M. the Fish Keg can order and have ready many different types of fish presently not on the menu (if available).Call for requests, price comparisons, etc. Some varieties we can obtain for you include Live Lobster, Red Snapper, Mahi Mahi, Halibut, Tuna, Grouper, etc. etc. etc.

Fish Keg party trays are a great idea for any occasion. Whether its seafood, salads, or chicken, we can have it prepared in the spur of the moment or better yet call ahead and place your order for any time of day and your party order will be ready for pickup. We can usually take your orders as early as 8:00 a.m. We promise to have it prepared fresh to your specifications. Don't forget to take home some of The Fish Kegs homemade sauces to complement your entree".

GEORGE'S UNLIT PUMPKIN PATCH

Pumpkins need light to grow. George's pumpkins are mighty fine this year. Although his Pumpkin Patch at 7313-15 N. Sheridan Road has been OPEN for two weeks now, George is feeling a little in the dark.

You see, pumpkins also need light to be SOLD, and George has none of that. Oh, he wants it, alright, but his boss may have initiated some sort of misunderstanding with ComEd, who has not yet sent out someone to connect the power. Nor has the boss brought the promised "Pumpkins For Sale" signs.

Kris Luck, owner of Quest Network Services right next door provided some small, printed signs and a ceramic pumpkin which holds a lit candle. But George needs light, or his Halloween season will be a bust!

He opens early and stays open until after sunset, so try and get there soon!

SPEAKING OF...

The Comcast bus shelter ad in the above "Signs" blog was trashed last night or early this morning by person or persons unknown. Here are the results of this CRIME.

Fortunately a call was made to JCDecaux, the company which owns the shelters, and a clean-up/repairman was sent to Sheridan Road and Estes Avenue early this afternoon.

But we'll be watching this space. Crime in Rogers Park is on the rise. Stay tuned.
