Today in Rogers Park is a series to inform our community of relevant daily events, including the arts, entertainment, presentations and community meetings. - Bill Morton



CAPS meeting is tonight, Thursday, July 26, at 7 pm, at Touhy Park (not at Pottawattomie Park, not CMSA) -- it is air conditioned.

This will be a joint meetings with residents of beat 2422, 2423, and 2424.

Attendance at meetings helps improve the quality of life in our neighborhood:

* encouraging active participation,
* developing strategies to address area and block issues,
* meeting other residents and
* getting to know beat officers.

Crime incidents in 2012 remain up by 1% over 2011, however, crime incidents dropped 19% in May and 13% in June (year over year). Total crime stats are still below 2008 and 2009 levels. Details are available at http://www.network2424.com .


BOTTOM LINE ... we need to be remain proactive!

We need to remain diligent in watching our blocks ... especially given the current economic climate. Call 911 WHENEVER you see a problem, including suspicious activity. Over the last 4 years, the concept of neighbors-working-with-neighbors has driven down crime. If we expect to continue see downward trend we MUST remain active on our blocks as things improve ... and continue to Call 911 aggressively!

Rogers Park Campaign Office Broken Into

Does Joe Moore still say that "Crime is Down"?


Police Thursday are investigating the break-in and theft of a computer from a political campaign office on the Far North Side. The ward's committeeman doubts the break-in was political in nature, though.

About 7:20 a.m. police got a call that a door was open at the office on the 1700 block of West Greenleaf, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said. The 49th Ward Democratic Party campaign office is at 1774 W. Greenleaf Ave., according to 49th Ward Democratic Committeeman David Fagus.

Responding officers found that a window had been broken and a door opened, Perez said.

A computer and monitor were taken, Fagus said.

It was not immediately known what time the break-in may have occurred. The incident is being investigated as a burglary, Perez said.

Fagus said this sort of thing has not happened at the office previously. "It's kind of an odd occurrence," he said.

The office is used mainly by Ald. Joe Moore, Fagus said, and the group Organizing for America, a national Democratic group, also uses the space.

Still, "it would be very unlikely (the break-in) is political," he said. "Nobody in the office is running for anything at the moment," and he noted the computer taken "was the one with the best monitor." Whomever broke into the office saw what appeared to be a valuable computer and monitor, broke in, and left, Fagus said.

Community / Crime Concerns from a Reader

Hi, Bill Morton.

I just stumbled upon your blog after a search for some sort of comprehensive community crime/concerns reporting for our 'hood. I have lived in the 6400 block of Magnolia for the last four years. In the last year, Devon has had some of the Police cameras installed to "curb crime" or whatever they are supposed to do. What I've seen is an increase of vagrancy and activity pushed into the residential streets to avoid the surveillance that these cameras offer. There has got to be a better way to do this, but on to my point.

Last night, I returned home from class a little before 10pm. Approx 20 minutes later, my doorbell rang. There was a man, whomever I had never seen/met, at my door asking for money for his mother's medication. His story was well put. His elderly mother, whom he said often waved at us, had just returned home from the hospital. She had suffered a stroke and he needed to get her medication, but had no cash. He offered to return the money when her husband returned home at 10:30 or so. He said that his van was often parked on the street and maybe we had noticed - Niedermeyer service or something like that. Anyway, I just immediately felt uneasy about this. I can't say I know who his mother is and could not recall ever seeing the van. I did not have money. I told him that I never have money in the house (which is true). Long story short, I called the local police station today. They had apparently gotten a report from someone else about him and were looking for him. Call me a small town girl. Call me naive. This just really creeped me out.

I pride myself in being a good neighbor. While I don't know everyone on the block, I do know a number. I really like to help my neighbors when I am able.

And it seems like this kind of activity is at an increase in my area. I can't help but to wonder about the effects of these cameras and the upswing in development in our little corner of Rogers Park. This has been a relatively quiet area until recently... well, with the exception of the bacchanal celebrations of the end of semesters or spring break.

Thanks for being a sound board. You seem to have an insight on the activities of our community. Thought I'd share.

SPEAKING OF...

The Comcast bus shelter ad in the above "Signs" blog was trashed last night or early this morning by person or persons unknown. Here are the results of this CRIME.



Fortunately a call was made to JCDecaux, the company which owns the shelters, and a clean-up/repairman was sent to Sheridan Road and Estes Avenue early this afternoon.



But we'll be watching this space. Crime in Rogers Park is on the rise. Stay tuned.
