Preparing the Unify - Rogers Park

It has been a worthwhile and fulfilling few weeks as the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce visited every local business within the borders of Rogers Park in attempt to pull our community together and unify our efforts to support local businesses and service organizations.

The chamber has invited everyone in town by several means including personal visits, invitations by mail, phone calls and emails. Several local media outlets such as RogersPark.com, The News-Star and the Multi-Facet Network are supporting the cause by extending invitations to their viewers and readership.

I feel it is important to thank everyone who is supporting this event and our local businesses. It is a step forward in stimulating our local economy and saving the benefit of having many great local shops in Rogers Park.

Thank you.

Local chambers voice concerns over new ordinance

Bill Morton, the president of the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce, said he is worried the distinction could stigmatize local chambers as political insiders. He said his group functions more as an information source than a political operator, helping small businesses with paperwork for permits and licenses.

Morton said the ordinance would also create “unneeded regulation” of local chambers. “That doesn’t sound good at all,” he said.

UPDATE: July 28th, 2011

Emanuel’s Ethics Plan Passed After Hiccup
Chamber officials had expressed concerns they would be required to register as lobbyists and pay hefty fees. But language was added to the ordinance Thursday that would exempt unpaid volunteers or employees of local chambers from registering as lobbyists. Paid chamber members still would be required to register and pay a $350 fee, like other lobbyists.

Rogers Park Garden Group 5th Annual Garden Meander

They have put up with pernicious possums and pachysandra, managed mulberries and malamutes, even raised radicchio and raspberries.  All the while, the gardeners on this year's meander along the 1600 and 1700 blocks of Jarvis Avenue have lovingly tended their plots--whether parkway or patio-side containers--over many seasons.
Come learn from your neighbors what has worked and what hasn't while enjoying a summer evening stroll through Jargowood.  The meander features a record ten gardens this year, but they are close together in a two-block stretch of Jarvis Avenue by Touhy Park.  The evening will conclude with a back-yard reception at the final garden on the meander, and once again Food for Thought will graciously supply light hors d'oeuvres.

Tuesday, July 26, 6-8:45 pm

Start: 1745 West Jarvis Avenue (just east of Clark, across from Rogers Park Fruit Market parking lot)

--Registration opens at 5:45 pm and closes promptly at 6:45 pm
--Gardens open from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm
--Reception from 7:15 pm until 8:45 pm

Tribune reporter, Matthew Walberg writes
"Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced plans to assign 92 more police officers — including several dozen from administrative jobs in City Hall and police headquarters — to beat patrols as part of his effort to boost the number of cops in neighborhoods hit hard by crime".

I thank Mayor Rahm Emanuel for responding to our calls and letters requesting more beat cops to make Rogers Park a safer place to live and work.

Dangerously Hot

It doesn't take a meteorologist to determine that it is dangerously hot in Rogers Park today. The Chicago Tribune stated in Chicago area bakes in first day of expected heat wave,

"Chicago-area residents braced for a week of hot weather as the heat index reached 103 at the city’s downtown lakefront, with much of the Midwest beginning to bake under a hot air mass that has plagued the South in recent weeks".

As I opened a jewelery and photography shop for a friend at Grandville and Broadway this morning, I realized that without fans or air-conditioning, customers would be at a minimum.

This afternoon at the beaches of Rogers Park, barbeques, swimming and drinking are being enjoyed by hundreds. Walkers and runners are enjoying Sheridan Road from Loyola, and all the way to Northwestern University in Evanston.

Here are some tips for surviving during this dangerously hot weather:

•Check on your neighbors. Elderly people (65 years and older), infants and children and people with chronic medical conditions are more prone to heat stress.

•Air-conditioning is the number one protective factor against heat-related illness and death. During conditions of extreme heat, spend time in locations with air-conditioning such as shopping malls, public libraries, or public health sponsored heat-relief shelters in your area.

•Get informed. Listen to local news and weather channels or contact your local public health department during extreme heat conditions for health and safety updates

•Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages and increase your fluid intake, regardless of your activity level.

•Wear Appropriate Clothing and Sunscreen. Wear as little clothing as possible when you are at home. Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Sunburn affects your body's ability to cool itself and causes a loss of body fluids. It also causes pain and damages the skin. If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat along with sunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes prior to going out. Continue to reapply it according to the package directions.

Rogers Park Bed Bugs

I posted a story on the increase of bed bugs in Rogers Park last week. The story was quickly picked up by Curbed Chicago due to it's relevance in our city.

Upon two of my Rogers Park friends bringing up personal bed bug stories in their buildings today,  I decided to elaborate on how wide-spread these blood suckers have become in our community.

A quick search of The Bed Bug Registery, produced reports of at least 36 incidents and counting, within Rogers Park's borders.

Sons of the Never Wrong

July 9th, 2011 8 p.m.
Tickets: $20 day of

Chicago-based folk trio Sons of the Never Wrong bring an eclectic performance of folk, jazz, pop and rock to Mayne Stage. The band has been creating original "turbo-charged folk music" for 17 years, bringing them a cult-like national following. The Chicago Tribune reviews, "The personal glues that hold the group together are a clear joy in performing together, a sense of gratitude to a loyal fan base, and three dry, delightfully skewed senses of humor." With their different take on three-part harmony coupled with witty, whimsical songs, Sons' style springs from a tradition, describing themselves as "not your grandpop's folk music." The band is comprised of singer and acoustic player Bruce Roper, folk vocalist Sue Demeland multi-instrumentalist and singer Deborah Lader, playing banjo, mandolin and guitar.

Mayne Stage is proud to announce jazz trumpet player Corey Wilkes Group, Billy the Mime and Haymarket Opera presents "Aci, Galatea, e Polifemo" and Stephanie Rogers Band CD Release Party. Early morning story

Anyone who was visiting the lakefront at 5:30 this morning noticed the magnificent sunrise. I saw many at Loyola Beach and Hartigan Beach and even Birchwood at the Lake taking in the sight this morning. I saw about half of the sun-watchers taking photos of the seemingly enlarged reddened sun.

I also took photos of the event, but ... I went deeper.

neighbor: "glad i moved!"

A recent conversation caught my interest concerning some of the worst aspects of Rogers Park.

My position on the issue:

... for those who consistently excuse the issues in our community including crime, corruption, poverty and violence by saying "It's the city, deal with it" or "It's the Chicago Way".. you are part of the problem, not the solution.

There is not room for this kind of behavior in Rogers Park, even if it has been this way for about 20 years.

The group is responsible for budgeting expenses, securing renters and collecting rent, complying with laws and regulations, and maintaining many of the investment properties owned and operated by Loyola University Chicago. Currently, LPM employs five undergraduate employees.

“By turning over the management of its retail portfolio to LPM, the University will experience a cost savings, but more importantly, it will provide an invaluable learning experience for the students involved with the business,” said Michael Bouras, president of LPM and CFO for Loyola Limited. “While the entire focus of the group will remain on our sole client, the University, there is a chance that we will expand in the future to serve non-Loyola clients.”

With its latest business enterprise, Loyola Limited looks to capitalize on the success of its inaugural business, The Flats at Loyola Station (www.loyolaflats.com). Launched in July 2010, The Flats is an upscale, luxury 10-unit guesthouse located in the heart of Rogers Park, across the street from Loyola University Chicago’s Lake Shore Campus (LSC). The group also plans to open two other businesses on the LSC this fall. ChainLinks, an on-campus, not-for-profit bike rental and repair shop, is scheduled to open in fall 2011. Felice’s Roman Style Pizza, a fast-casual Italian restaurant specializing in pizza, along with other Italian foods, is also scheduled to open this fall, likely in October.

“What these students have been able to accomplish in less than a year is remarkable,” said Michael Brosko, associate director of capital planning for the University and Loyola Limited program advisor. “These are legitimate business operations that these undergraduates are taking on, and the entrepreneurial experience they are gaining in the process will serve them positively well after they walk across the stage at graduation.”

From dawn to dusk

Dawn is the time that marks the beginning of the twilight before sunrise. It is recognized by the presence of weak sunlight, while the sun itself is still below the horizon. Dawn should not be confused with sunrise, which is the moment when the leading edge of the sun itself appears above the horizon.

The duration of the twilight period between dawn and sunrise varies greatly depending on the observer's latitude, from a few minutes in equatorial regions to many hours in polar regions. Dawn may easily be determined by observing a thread. When the color of a thread can be determined, changing from black to the thread's distinctive color, the 'crack of dawn' has occurred. This same measure of ambient light can be used to determine, conversely, the instant of dusk.
