To the Developers

While I terribly dislike developers that demolish beautiful historic, culturally significant buildings and ones that destroy our neighborhood by leaving dangerous unsecure holes in their wake... There is something to be said about developers who do their business legally and are being pressured by Alderman Joe Moore for campaign contributions under threat of being run out of town.

It's hard to take a stand when your livelihood is on the line, I'm sure, but isn't there something that can be done about this?

I've spoken with a great number of developers, and they have told me that they would run Joe out on a rail if they could, but they feel that the bully can't be beaten.

How can the vicious circle be broken?

Spring Concert at Willye B. White Recreation Center

There will be a spring concert, Monday, March 22 at 6:30 PM at the Willye B. White Recreation Center. The concert will feature the youth who are participating in the P.A.U.S.E. music program. They have learned to read and play music after school and are presenting their second concert.

LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY HOSTS ANNUAL HOUSE WALK

ON MAY 2nd in INDIAN BOUNDARY PARK AREA

Chicago – March 15, 2010 - The Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society will host its Annual House Walk on Sunday, May 2, 2010 from 12 Noon to 5:00 p.m.

This year’s tour will highlight homes surrounding Indian Boundary Park, including the notable Park Castles and Park Gables apartment buildings.

Registration for the house walk is available at www.rpwrhs.org or by calling (773) 764-4078. Admission is $25 for society members and $30 for non-members.

A discounted rate of $20 for members and $25 for non-members will be offered through April 25. Day-of registration will be available at the Indian Boundary Park Cultural Center, 2500 West Lunt Ave. beginning at 12 Noon. The last tour will start at 3:30 p.m.

Several units of the Park Castles and Park Gables will be open for the tour as well as the buildings’ spectacular Art Deco swimming pools. The structures grace the eastern and northern boundary of the park – a magnificent group of Gothic and Tudor Revival style structures built in the late 1920s by developers Gubbins, O’Donnell & Blietz.

Indian Boundary Park was opened in 1922 as the centerpiece of the Ridge Avenue Park District. The 13-acre park was designed as a pastoral landscape with picturesque gardens, a lagoon with a small island, rolling lawns, and meandering paths. Its field house, now the Indian Boundary Park Cultural Center, was designed by prominent architect Clarence Hatzfeld, and is noted for its unusual combination of Tudor Revival design and Native American images and sculptures.

Several other homes near the park owned by notable 1920s personalities will be included in the tour. The Indian Boundary area is a hidden gem on the north side, with an abundance of historically and architecturally significant buildings and landscapes.

A new exhibit in the park’s cultural center, A Park is Your Front Yard: Indian Boundary Park and the Gubbins, McDonnell & Blietz Co-ops, 1915-1929 will be open to tour participants on May 2.

The Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society was formed in 1975 to preserve the history of Rogers Park and West Ridge as a vital part of the City of Chicago, and to provide interactive education about these communities to the public.

Another case of corruption in the 49th Ward

I spoke with another developer last night about his company and the political corruption that follows.

I met him at a fundraiser in Lincoln Square. He told me that when working on his new building on Morse Avenue Alderman Joe Moore approached his workers and demanded the purchase of three tables (for his fundraiser), or else the building would not be completed.

While the developer was doing his business legally and within the proper zoning, he bought the three tables.

Willye B. White Park Advisory Council Fundraising

Youth between ages 13-15 are participating in 'Inner City Hoops' basketball tournaments every Friday at the Willye B. White Park Community Center. The first event was Friday, March 12th and will be held every Friday, with the last event being April 23rd. The event begins at 5:00 pm and lasts until approximately 7:30 pm.


Throughout the duration of the 'Inner City Hoops' tournament, the Park Advisory Council will be operating a concession stand, selling hot dogs, chips, cookies, bottled water to raise funds. All proceeds will go to help fund after school programs and summer camp for underprivileged children. Stop in, catch a tournament, and enjoy a hot dog or just donate to the kids fund.


Through it's fund raising efforts the Council offered 80% discount stocking stuffers for the Winter Holiday so kids could attend park activities while on break. The 80% discount was carried into the winter Park District program session and will continue with the spring program session. Program sessions are 10 weeks and the Spring 2010 session runs from March 29th thru June 6th.
