Racine's only Hollywood Video store is now a victim of a corporate bankruptcy filing and will permanently close this spring. The local Hollywood Video store, 4700 Washington Ave., will close in about six to eight weeks, an employee said Monday before referring other questions to the corporate media department.
Chicago – March 15, 2010 - The Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society will host its Annual House Walk on Sunday, May 2, 2010 from 12 Noon to 5:00 p.m.
This year’s tour will highlight homes surrounding Indian Boundary Park, including the notable Park Castles and Park Gables apartment buildings.
Registration for the house walk is available at www.rpwrhs.org or by calling (773) 764-4078. Admission is $25 for society members and $30 for non-members.
A discounted rate of $20 for members and $25 for non-members will be offered through April 25. Day-of registration will be available at the Indian Boundary Park Cultural Center, 2500 West Lunt Ave. beginning at 12 Noon. The last tour will start at 3:30 p.m.
Several units of the Park Castles and Park Gables will be open for the tour as well as the buildings’ spectacular Art Deco swimming pools. The structures grace the eastern and northern boundary of the park – a magnificent group of Gothic and Tudor Revival style structures built in the late 1920s by developers Gubbins, O’Donnell & Blietz.
Indian Boundary Park was opened in 1922 as the centerpiece of the Ridge Avenue Park District. The 13-acre park was designed as a pastoral landscape with picturesque gardens, a lagoon with a small island, rolling lawns, and meandering paths. Its field house, now the Indian Boundary Park Cultural Center, was designed by prominent architect Clarence Hatzfeld, and is noted for its unusual combination of Tudor Revival design and Native American images and sculptures.
Several other homes near the park owned by notable 1920s personalities will be included in the tour. The Indian Boundary area is a hidden gem on the north side, with an abundance of historically and architecturally significant buildings and landscapes.
A new exhibit in the park’s cultural center, A Park is Your Front Yard: Indian Boundary Park and the Gubbins, McDonnell & Blietz Co-ops, 1915-1929 will be open to tour participants on May 2.
The Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society was formed in 1975 to preserve the history of Rogers Park and West Ridge as a vital part of the City of Chicago, and to provide interactive education about these communities to the public.
Youth between ages 13-15 are participating in 'Inner City Hoops' basketball tournaments every Friday at the Willye B. White Park Community Center. The first event was Friday, March 12th and will be held every Friday, with the last event being April 23rd. The event begins at 5:00 pm and lasts until approximately 7:30 pm.
Throughout the duration of the 'Inner City Hoops' tournament, the Park Advisory Council will be operating a concession stand, selling hot dogs, chips, cookies, bottled water to raise funds. All proceeds will go to help fund after school programs and summer camp for underprivileged children. Stop in, catch a tournament, and enjoy a hot dog or just donate to the kids fund.
Through it's fund raising efforts the Council offered 80% discount stocking stuffers for the Winter Holiday so kids could attend park activities while on break. The 80% discount was carried into the winter Park District program session and will continue with the spring program session. Program sessions are 10 weeks and the Spring 2010 session runs from March 29th thru June 6th.

While I terribly dislike developers that demolish beautiful historic, culturally significant buildings and ones that destroy our neighborhood by leaving dangerous unsecure holes in their wake... There is something to be said about developers who do their business legally and are being pressured by Alderman Joe Moore for campaign contributions under threat of being run out of town.
It's hard to take a stand when your livelihood is on the line, I'm sure, but isn't there something that can be done about this?
I've spoken with a great number of developers, and they have told me that they would run Joe out on a rail if they could, but they feel that the bully can't be beaten.
There will be a spring concert, Monday, March 22 at 6:30 PM at the Willye B. White Recreation Center. The concert will feature the youth who are participating in the P.A.U.S.E. music program. They have learned to read and play music after school and are presenting their second concert.
Please stop in and applaud the hard work of both students and instructor!

I spoke with another developer last night about his company and the political corruption that follows.
I met him at a fundraiser in Lincoln Square. He told me that when working on his new building on Morse Avenue Alderman Joe Moore approached his workers and demanded the purchase of three tables (for his fundraiser), or else the building would not be completed.
While the developer was doing his business legally and within the proper zoning, he bought the three tables.

Plans to breathe new life into a hidden architectural gem in downtown Evanston picked up speed recently as City Council members agreed to explore the possibility of reopening one of the Chicago area's grandest movie palaces as a performing arts center.
The Evanston City Council has voted unanimously to seek a $50,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts as seed money for a possible rehabilitation of the 84-year-old Varsity Theater.
If the city gets the grant funds, it will contribute an additional $50,000. The money would be used to study the finances, architecture and proposed business plan to determine if reopening the shuttered downtown theater as a performing arts center is viable, city officials said.
"I think there's economic development impacts for the community," said Doug Gaynor, the city's director of parks, recreation and forestry. "It's always great to have cultural arts activities in the downtown."
"It needs work, but it's got great possibilities," said Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl. "What makes it beautiful and exciting to me is not the shape it's in right now but the shape it could be in."
About half of the interior décor has been removed or painted over, but the theater still has a distinct old movie palace quality, and the structure itself is in solid shape, said owner Steven Rogin.
"I think it could be a focal point for the arts community in Evanston," he said.
It's unclear at this point where the city would get the millions of dollars it would take to rehab the theater and where it would find a permanent tenant for a performing arts center. But Fiske said those are issues that could be addressed later.
"The grant money would allow us to get an idea of what it would take to reconfigure the building so that it would work," she said. "We're really lucky we retained that building."

The character of Rogers Park can be described many ways. It is what we know and love about Rogers Park. It is the personality and spirit of where we live. Examples could be the residents, the beaches or even the cobblestone street on Glenwood Avenue. The character that I am referring to in this case are landmarks of our neighborhood, the buildings from the 1920’s and earlier.
Many share my view about preserving the history and culture of Rogers Park. It is the character of the neighborhood that increases business, creates tourism and lures new residents. I would strongly support the maintenance, safety and tenancy of these buildings.
I stated my view on crime prevention earlier. I feel that we must tackle our worst issues head-on. If we are ever going to drastically reduce crime in Rogers Park, we can no longer afford to sweep the issues under the rug. We will not find a long-term solution until we acknowledge the issues.
There needs to be more support for our local businesses. I’ve worked at a local Rogers Park business for over seven years, and have seen how entrepreneurs often struggle before becoming successful. The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce uses a well-rounded approach to supporting local business including, our Shop Local campaign, referrals, networking events and radio/television/internet/press promotional campaigns. Our businesses need to be strong and sustainable to last throughout the years. I’m all about longevity.

I remember a time before I started blogging. I was working very hard for nearly two years to renovate a beautiful 1920's vaudeville theater, The Adelphi. Back then, when I first learned of the threat of demolition, Craig Gernhardt supported the efforts of my non-profit organization Citizens for the Adelphi Theater and got the word out to the people of Rogers Park through his blog, The 'Broken Heart' of Rogers Park. With his support, and many others, we were able to get over 1,000 petition signatures in favor of saving the Adelphi Theater.
Later, I wrote my own blog. After 283,420 visitors and almost 1,700 articles later, here we are at Rogers Park in 1,000 Words!
