Several police cars are zooming North down Sheridan Road. Does anyone know what's going on this time? - Bill Morton
UPDATE:
It was a three car crash in front South of Howard Street on Sheridan Road. I'll post some videos tomorrow.

Rogers Park synagogue focus of terrorist threat
Officials would not identify exact destinations for the packages. A U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they were addressed to two Chicago locations — in the Rogers Park and Lakeview neighborhoods, Chicago Breaking News reports.

Halloween Walk on Saturday
Halloween has become one of America's favorite holidays and why not?
It is steeped in tradition, folklore, and mythology for starters. It's not just for children but their parents as well - bring the kids and the family dog along for a Halloween Walk.
We'll meet at Willye White Park at 1610 West Howard, Saturday October 30 at 8:30 PM. Bring your sage sticks, incense, candles, glow sticks, flashlights, tambourines, bells, drums for a walk through the three parks North of Howard and on to Rogers Beach. If you have a favorite Halloween tale or family tradition to share we'll take a minute or two for story time.
In some schools of thought, Halloween is the night when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is the thinnest - when those on the living side can communicate to their departed loved ones. It's a time to honor their memory and lives.
Its also a time for preparation for the long winter as we reap the bounty of summer. But most of us relate Halloween to pranks and costumes, parties and fun. So please join us and make the first real Halloween Walk a fun event to remember. Maybe we can frighten the evil spirits away!

Public Health and Safety issue
Swanette Triem has workers on her property without a permit displayed again. Those who have been following the Swanette Triem/North Shore School story on Rogers Park in 1,000 Words may remember when Swanette Triem was inspected by the IEPA during the illegal and unsafe demolition of the North Shore School.
Swanette Triem continuously creates public safety and health hazards at her 1217 W. Chase Avenue Chicago, IL. 60626 property. Some of these issues are demolition and construction without a permit displayed, unsecured dangerous and contaminated property, Her crews spreading asbestos and other poisons into the land, our air and water.
Swanette Triem is a supporter of Alderman Joe Moore and contributed financially to the alderman before the demolition of the North Shore School.
Swanette Triem must believe that her bank account trumps the public safety and health of our community.
From an earlier post concerning Swanette Triem's North Shore School demolition on the same property:

These photos are of the IEPA (Illinois Evironmental Protection Agency), inspecting the North Shore School demolition site for contaminants that could poison residents of Rogers Park.
The demolition was ordered to stop, but Swanette Triem, had it continued over the evenings and weekends when the IEPA would not be watching. this poisoned the air of residents with asbestos and other hazardous substances. Alderman Joe Moore approved the rezoning, then demolition after accepting campaign contributions. You can read more about this here: http://rp1000.blogspot.com/2010/02/its-time-to-revisit.html.

Blogging serves local news needs for Rogers Park
UPDATE
"Hi, Mr. Morton my name is Brandon Love and I am a journalism student at Columbia College Chicago. I am also a new resident to the Rogers park area. I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me regarding blogging as a new form of media". - Brandon
Brandon,
Thank you for contacting me and welcome to the neighborhood!
What would you say sets blogging apart from other forms of news?
Blogging is set apart from other news sources because the medium often features hyper local reports from residents who know their neighborhood best. Reports can consist of anything from a few sentences about a happening to an entire essay about local crime, politics or culture. I always try to keep my Rogers Park blog relevant to Rogers Park and Chicago's 49th Ward.
How has the Rogers Park neighborhood influenced your blogs?
The state of Rogers Park is what influenced me to create my main blog, Rogers Park in 1,000 Words (www.RP1000.blogspot.com). I was a disappointed when I discovered corruption in the Alderman's office, which I had volunteered to campaign for several years earlier. I had never realized the relationship of politicians and condo developers in Rogers Park before. This realization disturbed me to the point where I had to vent it out. I created my first blog.
Reading through some of my blog posts, you will find other topics influenced by life in Rogers Park such as local businesses, culture, history, local events and photos of every aspect of our neighborhood.
What are some negative/positive aspects of blogging?
Blogs can be a double edged sword.
On one hand, blogs can be used to alert the community of public safety or health hazards in your neighborhood. Blogs can be utilized to promote local businesses and increase sales, so that they can stay open. They are a form of communication, an outlet for creativity and a medium to initiate change.
On the other hand, blogs can be used to cyber bully, spread propaganda and destroy a person’s reputation. Cyber bullying is an abusive act of some bloggers.
How many blogs do you have and also how many would you say that you follow?
I have created many blogs. A few are specifically about Rogers Park or the 49th Ward, others are about my other interests, such as helping small businesses, technology and even a blog to feature my resume to potential employers.
I follow over ten blogs that compliment my photography and writing. I want to stay informed about important information in my neighborhood including news, events, job openings and the latest computer technology updates.

A Message from George
I had the opportunity to chat online with George our Pumpkin Patch/Christmas Tree friend.
"Hey Bill, This is George. I'll be seeing you guys in November. Sorry to miss you guys for pumpkin season, but I've been busy. Take care of Aaron for me til I get back. I'll be here for a lil while, so hit me back..."
So, contrary to the assumptions and rumors, George is not sick and will be returning to his Christmas Tree duties in November.
In the meantime, be sure to check out these pumpkin videos and make a purchase from Aaron before Halloween!

All about books
Today I donated roughly two thousand books to local bookstore The Armadillo's Pillow. The books that I donated were the ones that I saved from the North Shore School demolition a few years ago.
The Armadillo's Pillow is going through a financial issue right now, and hopefully these books can assist in saving the business.
So, if you attended The North Shore School or care about our current Rogers Park businesses, please stop by The Armadillo's Pillow and purchase some books that were from the North Shore School library.
The Armadillo's Pillow is located at 6753 N. Sheridan Road Chicago, IL. 60626. http://www.armadillospillow.com/
Thank you,
