Organizing for change in no-man’s land: Where Evanston meets Rogers Park
    by Laura Phelps
    May 04, 2011

Living in a so-called “no man’s land,” Kyle Hillman worries that his vote doesn’t count for much.

Hillman lives in the far northeast corner of Rogers Park, the area bounded by Clark Street on the west and Lake Michigan on the east, Howard Street on the south and the Chicago-Evanston border on the north. It’s part of the 18th Illinois House District, a district in which Evanston voters vastly outnumber Chicago residents.

That imbalance is why Hillman is advocating that his Rogers Park neighborhood be incorporated into the 14th House District to the south.

Every 10 years, states are required to redistrict based on new U.S. census figures. If a redistricting plan isn’t adopted by June 30, a commission will be established to create one by Oct. 5. (That’s an unlikely outcome, said Terry Pastika, executive director and community lawyer at the Citizen Advocacy Center. Because the Illinois legislature is so heavily Democratic, she expects a decision in the next two months.)

Now that both the Illinois House and Senate have completed their legally required public hearings, community advocates and residents like Hillman are waiting to find out how the maps and testimony they offered will be incorporated into the final map.

  2. After many discussion with the aldermans office, a side discussion has developed regarding the former synagogue site at 1239 w Pratt.

At present time they are playing with the idea of putting a parking lot there. Which would help the businesses out at Sheridan and Pratt.

I am currently recovering from my efforts to clear it of debris tendinitis both arms, still hurts but getting better, just over did it chopping the wood up. Glad that whoever took over the land finished clearing it.

  3. The event looks great and the Rogers Park Chamber has really grown. Plenty of interesting businesses and people. I look forward to visiting the establishments in Rogers Park. Hopefully, the chamber will continue grow and represent businesses that serve the community.

  5. This event, the first one of the year, was our most successful yet.

Everyone who attended had the opportunity to network with each other, enjoy delicious tastes from local businesses and learn more about our chamber of commerce.
