A federal jury convicted a city building inspector today on charges he demanded thousands of dollars in bribes to overlook code violations.
Jose Hernandez was convicted on two counts of soliciting or accepting bribes. U.S. District Judge David Coar scheduled sentencing for Dec. 14.
Witnesses said Hernandez informed them of code violations, then gave them the number of a private "expediter" whom he said would take care of the violations for a fee.
Victims who didn't pay soon found a "stop work order" sticker on the front of their building, leading to months-long delays in obtaining permits and approvals to resume work.
