93XRT FLASHBACK WELCOMES THE ZOMBIES
By this stage of the rock ‘n’ roll plot, most bands that made their first mark in the 1960s are either at home tending their gardens or peddling nostalgia to finance their ex-wives. Very few are enhancing their legendary reputations with new releases, fresh songwriting and tireless touring. That’s where the Zombies come in.
Underpinned, just as they were in those early days, by the individual and collective brilliance of vocal craftsman Colin Blunstone and keyboard virtuoso Rod Argent, the Zombies are simultaneously celebrating the past and seizing the future. Not for them the option of sitting home and spinning yarns, as they’d be quite entitled to do, of making their undying hit singles, sharing UK bills with Dusty Springfield, US shows with the Beach Boys, or following the Beatles’ Abbey Road sessions for Sgt. Pepper to make an album that would reverberate for generations to come.

Last year,” says Blunstone, “we played in the UK, US, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Holland, Japan and the Philippines. It was incredible.” 2013 contains a new live album, three separate American tours in it (not to mention a festival in Central Park, a cruise with the Moody Blues and much more) and the group are constantly in demand for the prestigious US network television music shows, interviews and radio sessions. Talk about just desserts for dues paid.

The amazing new chapters that the Zombies have added to their story in recent times have created a momentum that gets greater by the year. The group have finally received their due as the great undervalued masters of the original British invasion, with rave reviews and acknowledgements about their influence from an inventory of modern artists, from Paul Weller to Dave Grohl.

But far from resting on those laurels, the band are forging ahead, with a bulging 2013 datebook and an enthusiastic commitment to start work – just as soon as there’s time – on the 2014 release of what will be the much-anticipated follow-up to 2011’s Breathe Out, Breathe In.

Meanwhile, there’s The Zombies Live In The UK, a new ten-track collection recorded on the road last year, and released in May to coincide with the British leg of their 2013 itinerary. Sony Music release a similar live album in the US as part of their Extended Versions series around March 2013.

We’re very excited about the way the band’s playing,” says Argent. “Colin’s voice is as strong as it ever was, and I feel that my voice is better than it used to be, because I’ve worked on it. Our chops, both playing and singing, are better now than they were before.”

Et Tu Bruce

Described as “West London meets West Coast”, Et Tu Brucé blend pop, rock, folk, and country, and tie them all together with their signature harmonic sound. Composed of Londoners Jamie White, Matthew O’Toole, and brothers Craig and Darryn Bruce, they are fast becoming the band to watch. Likened to a number of great bands, they inhabit a space on the spectrum where few others reside. They write, perform, and produce their own records, and in doing so have collected a number of accolades from established journalists and a host of new music champions. Their music echoes from the golden age of records, crunching through the barriers and fixing itself to the future. Formed in 2010, Et Tu Brucé have a rich reputation on the live circuit in London, headlining some of the most illustrious city venues, such as The Water Rats, Dublin Castle, The Half Moon, The Hope & Anchor, and countless more. Fixtures on national and commercial radio stations, Et Tu Brucé continue to aim for excellence.

Their first UK single 'This City/Never Seen You Cry' was championed by BBC 6 Music, BBC London & X‐FM amongst many other tastemaker radio stations. With comparisons to Byrds, Beach Boys, Foo Fighters, Wilco, The Kinks and the Beta Band, and a huge army of followers, ‘Suburban Sunshine’ brings Et Tu Brucé into the elite. In England, their triumphant debut album Suburban Sunshine, was bestowed the title of “the sound of summer” by Best of British Unsigned and remains one of the most critically lauded albums of 2012. Amongst the host of accolades for Et Tu Brucé were nominations for Best British Band by the Online Music Awards, and Album of the Year by the Indie Music Digest.

Et Tu Brucé made their debut on American shores this year at SXSW in Austin, and will return this Summer and Fall to celebrate the US release of ‘Suburban Sunshine’ (June 11, 2013 on SonaBLAST! Records) with two tours supporting British Rock icons The Zombies.

Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce Fresh Start Monday at Howard Street and Bosworth Avenue

The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce was founded in April of 2009 with one goal: to help struggling small businesses, and in fact, all businesses, to become successful. Chamber founder Bill Morton wasn't sure how exactly to do this, but he knew that he would do what it takes to succeed.

The Chamber struggled it's first two years, but in December of 2011, the Chamber and all of it's members started taking large strides to turn the Chamber into the vision they saw.

Chamber Founder and President Bill Morton came up with the idea of a neighborhood clean-up in support of the businesses. Eventually, the program that was created was Fresh Start Monday, an event that occurs the first and third Monday of the month from April through to November, weather pending.

The next Fresh Start Monday will be on July 1st, 2013 at Howard Street and Bosworth Avenue.
This is a public event from 6 pm - 7 pm. RSVP calls to (773) 850-0049 and walk-ups are OK. This is a free community event.

Today in Rogers Park - June 27th, 2013

Today in Rogers Park is a series to inform our community of relevant daily events, including the arts, entertainment, presentations and community meetings. - Bill Morton

CAPS meeting - beat 2422, 2423, and 2424 at 7pm
Chicago Math & Science Academy, 7212 N. CLARK STREET (in the cafeteria) CHICAGO, IL. 60626

Community policing has become a popular crime-fighting strategy across the country, but there is no one definition of community policing or one specific way of carrying it out. From the time he was appointed in April 1992, Police Superintendent Matt L. Rodriguez advanced a strategy of community policing that is specific to Chicago. CAPS is a unique philosophy that borrows from the experiences of other cities, but also breaks important new ground in meeting the needs of the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago community.

What makes CAPS innovative is that it brings the police, the community, and other City agencies together to identify and solve neighborhood crime problems, rather than simply react to their symptoms after the fact. Problem solving at the neighborhood level is supported by a variety of strategies, including neighborhood-based beat officers; regular Beat Community Meetings involving police and residents; extensive training for both police and community; more efficient use of City services that impact crime; and new technology to help police and residents target crime hot spots.

With CAPS, police officers continue to enforce the law and respond rapidly to serious crimes and life-threatening emergencies. But CAPS recognizes that the police alone cannot solve the City's crime problems. It takes a combined effort of police, community, and City government working together.

Implementation of CAPS began in April 1993 with the official roll-out in five of the City's 25 police districts: Englewood (7th), Marquette (10th), Austin (15th), Morgan Park (22nd), and Rogers Park (24th). These prototype districts are diverse in terms of their demographics, economics, crime problems, and levels of community organization. As such, they provided a valuable laboratory for testing and improving the CAPS model before it was expanded Citywide.

Implementation of CAPS in the other 20 police districts began in 1994, and the strategy is now operational in all of Chicago's neighborhoods. The five original prototype districts continue to serve as a laboratory for testing new ideas and new technology.

CAPS has been recognized as one of the most ambitious community policing initiatives in the United States. It has been cited as a model by numerous national experts, including officials at the U.S. Department of Justice and academic authorities on community policing. Management guru Tom Peters featured the Chicago Police Department and CAPS in his latest business video, Service With Soul.

By opening up the dialogue between police and community, CAPS is producing a number of important success stories at the neighborhood level. Across the City, the CAPS partnership is tackling serious crime problems, as well as those neighborhood conditions that breed crime -- conditions such as abandoned buildings and vehicles, vacant lots, drug houses, and graffiti.

Together, we are working to identify and solve neighborhood crime problems, block by block, and to improve the quality of life in Chicago's neighborhoods.
