Senator Dick Durbin on Loyola Station renovation

The Loyola CTA Station will soon see major improvements, ensuring the safety of passengers and pedestrians, as the result of $11 million in federal funding, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin said today.

Durbin joined local elected officials, representatives of the CTA and Loyola University, and members of the Rogers Park community at the Loyola CTA Station to announce $18.5 million – including $11 million in federal funds – to begin immediate repairs to the dilapidated Loyola CTA Station and to conduct an environmental study on the extension and modernization of the Red and Purple Lines. The design work for the Loyola CTA station project is already underway and construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2012.

Durbin, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, secured $10 million in federal funding for the project in the fiscal year 2010 Transportation and Housing Appropriations Bill, and $1 million in the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act (SAFETEA-LU).

“This project is the result of a federal, state, and local public-private partnership which has brought together the Federal Transit Authority, the CTA, Loyola University, and the local community in order to make desperately needed improvements to this station and bring it back to a state of good repair. Thousands of students and commuters use this station every day, and this funding will ensure their safety and make certain that the station is able to continue serving the transportation needs of this community for years to come,” Durbin said.

At the Loyola CTA Station, the federal and local investment will help stabilize existing infrastructure, make strategic upgrades to the existing station, and redirect passenger flow for pedestrian safety. The project will include upgrades to the viaduct and improve lighting and visibility. It will also move the station entrance farther north, and create a plaza in front of the reoriented station entrance, increasing safety for pedestrians by keeping them away from vehicular traffic. Funding through the SAFETEA-LU legislation will be used for land acquisition, and roadway and pedestrian improvements around the station.

Billy the Mime

Thursday, August 25 at 8pm
Tickets: $20 general admission|$25 reserved

Billy the Mime is not for children or the easily offended. Billy has rejuvenated an art form that has been justly ridiculed due to untrained and amateur practitioners performing pretentious and self-indulgent work or weak imitations of Marcel Marceau. He has restored its ability to entertain, amuse, shock, and move an audience.

Billy garnered international attention with his show stopping appearance in the hit documentary The Aristocrats. Chicago Reader raves, "A dazzling showman! Irreverent! Masterful! Brilliant comic!" Billy has appeared on The Jimmy Kimmel Show on ABC and Penn & Teller's Bullshit! on Showtime. He appeared at The New York International Fringe Festival garnering rave reviews and sold-out shows. The New York Times called Billy's live show "Politically incorrect, shockingly unsentimental and as uncomfortably funny as a dirty joke in church! Sardonically twisted! Skillfully obscene! Chilling!"

Participatory Budgeting - An Open Letter to Alderman Joe Moore

Alderman Joe Moore,

This is Bill Morton. We have met on hundreds of occassions over the past decade. For the readership of this open letter, I am a resident of the 49th Ward and a registered voter.

Despite our differences concerning the best interest of Rogers Park and how the 49th Ward should be lead, I have signed up for your newsletters at least ten-times in your office and at your meetings. As a concerned citizen and a pro-active community activist, I have had to rely on our neighbors to forward your e-mail blasts to me, as you have cut my email from your list as quickly as you establish the addresses connection to me or one of my organizations.

I can only speculate the reason why you would want to exclude my works, expertise and will to better our community for everybody.

My motivation for composing this open letter to you at this time is relative to your latest e-mail blast regarding Participatory Budgeting. I have participated/voted in Participatory Budgeting in the past and upon reading the following, it became timely to address my exclusion.

"Luis Klein, our 49th Ward Participatory Budgeting coordinator, has resigned to return to school full-time and I am looking for someone to assume the task of overseeing the participatory budgeting process in our community. My staff and I already have interviewed a number of very fine candidates for that position, but before we make a final decision, we want to make sure we are not overlooking other well-qualified individuals".

I am routinely overlooked by your agenda and was not included in your quest to "make sure we are not overlooking other well-qualified individuals". Exclusion due to personal or political differences is not acceptable. Exclusion due to personal or political differences is not in the best interest of our community. It is certainly not professional or healthy for your constituency either. I am interested in Participatory Budgeting as well as learning more about the process and how the votes are counted. I am in fact interested in every program and organization that affects the 49th Ward and our neighborhood of Rogers Park.

I am heavily involved in many organizations and businesses within the 49th Ward and need to know your agenda and propositions. Please send me your e-mail blasts as regularly as you send them to the many - who take the time to forward them to keep me informed. My email address is written in pen on at least ten of your email sign-up sheets. If you have any further questions, call me at any time.

- Bill Morton

The Sun Sets

Rogers Park sunset at 7:44pm

Walt Whitman mentioned a sunset he experienced in Chicago in his famous poem, Song at Sunset.

Song at Sunset. by Walt Whitman
SPLENDOR of ended day, floating and filling me!
Hour prophetic—hour resuming the past!
Inflating my throat—you, divine average!
You, Earth and Life, till the last ray gleams, I sing.

Open mouth of my Soul, uttering gladness,
Eyes of my Soul, seeing perfection,
Natural life of me, faithfully praising things;
Corroborating forever the triumph of things.

Illustrious every one!
Illustrious what we name space—sphere of unnumber’d spirits;
Illustrious the mystery of motion, in all beings, even the tiniest insect;
Illustrious the attribute of speech—the senses—the body;
Illustrious the passing light! Illustrious the pale reflection on the new moon in the
western
sky!
Illustrious whatever I see, or hear, or touch, to the last.

Good in all,
In the satisfaction and aplomb of animals,
In the annual return of the seasons,
In the hilarity of youth,
In the strength and flush of manhood,
In the grandeur and exquisiteness of old age,
In the superb vistas of Death.

Wonderful to depart;
Wonderful to be here!
The heart, to jet the all-alike and innocent blood!
To breathe the air, how delicious!
To speak! to walk! to seize something by the hand!
To prepare for sleep, for bed—to look on my rose-color’d flesh;
To be conscious of my body, so satisfied, so large;
To be this incredible God I am;
To have gone forth among other Gods—these men and women I love.

Wonderful how I celebrate you and myself!
How my thoughts play subtly at the spectacles around!
How the clouds pass silently overhead!
How the earth darts on and on! and how the sun, moon, stars, dart on and on!
How the water sports and sings! (Surely it is alive!)
How the trees rise and stand up—with strong trunks—with branches and leaves!
(Surely there is something more in each of the tree—some living Soul.)

O amazement of things! even the least particle!
O spirituality of things!
O strain musical, flowing through ages and continents—now reaching me and America!
I take your strong chords—I intersperse them, and cheerfully pass them forward.

I too carol the sun, usher’d, or at noon, or, as now, setting,
I too throb to the brain and beauty of the earth, and of all the growths of the earth,
I too have felt the resistless call of myself.

As I sail’d down the Mississippi,
As I wander’d over the prairies,
As I have lived—As I have look’d through my windows, my eyes,
As I went forth in the morning—As I beheld the light breaking in the east;
As I bathed on the beach of the Eastern Sea, and again on the beach of the Western Sea;
As I roam’d the streets of inland Chicago—whatever streets I have roam’d;
Or cities, or silent woods, or peace, or even amid the sights of war;
Wherever I have been, I have charged myself with contentment and triumph.

I sing the Equalities, modern or old,
I sing the endless finales of things;
I say Nature continues—Glory continues;
I praise with electric voice;
For I do not see one imperfection in the universe;
And I do not see one cause or result lamentable at last in the universe.

O setting sun! though the time has come,
I still warble under you, if none else does, unmitigated adoration.

Mayne Stage - Life in a Marital Institution

A poignant, darkly humorous autobiographical comedy set improbably in a hospice, James sits at the bedside of his dying sister, who asks him to trade places with her. Until she realizes that would mean trading places with him...being in his marriage...a fate worse than death! The monologue cuts back and forth between the hospice, where his sister is engaged to be married, and scenes from his marriage, exploring infidelity, near-death childbirth and other high-stakes yet hilarious adventures. In the process, the comedy explores the roots of romantic love in familial love, and the notion: not only can you go home again, you can't not go home again; you can't escape your past. Until you confront it...which James does through his sister’s deathbed wedding, before returning home to confront whether his own marriage should come to an end. Life in a Marital Institution premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, had a sold-out run at 59E59 Theaters in New York City, before transferring Off-Broadway to critical raves at the Soho Playhouse.

We are the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce!

The Rogers Park community united for success.

Signing nineteen Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce membership certificates.

We are working together so that businesses can survive these difficult economic times in Rogers Park.

     I was recently asked "What is your most important role in the Rogers Park community?"

     I thought about the many organizations that I am currently a part of including the Willye B. White Park Advisory Council, The Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society, the Alden Village North Advisory Council and my efforts with the Citizens for the Adelphi Theater non-profit organization. I replied, "I think that I have accomplished the most good for our community as President of the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce".

     Founding the Rogers Park chamber has been an inspiring labor of love. All of the board members are small business owners or heads of local organizations. We are volunteers who in the best interest of our community, devote our time to preserving great local businesses and boosting Rogers Park business through any means possible. During our recent Unifying Rogers Park event, we connected businesses with clients and encouraged business owners to be vocal about their role in our community. The purpose of this event was

To introduce and refer our community to its local businesses and service organizations. To unify our efforts, to guide businesses, service organizations and individuals to establish new businesses and promote existing businesses within the Rogers Park community.

     We feel strongly about and believe in our organization. We personally walk our neighborhood to visit every business in Rogers Park on a regular basis. If a struggling mom-and-pop shop needs a fundraiser, If a transporation hub or storefront needs to be cleared of snow, The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce represents and supports Rogers Park business.
