Veggie Bingo at Howard Area Community Garden

As always, our sources give out great information so we can keep the community abreast of the on-goings!

Below is some information received about an event happening on Wednesday August 28th to support the Howard Area Community Garden:

We'll be calling games and grilling dogs at the Hideout to support Chicago's COMMUNITY
GARDENS. Co-sponsored by NeighborSpace, Hideout Veggie Bingo features a grand prize of fresh
produce from Irv and Shelly's FRESH PICKS and a cornucopia of other prizes drawn from local
artisan food producers, farmers, and gardeners--plus FREE HOT DOGS donated by HOT DOUG'S!
Bingo cards are $3 each, or 4 for $10; all proceeds benefit local gardens--this week going to the Howard Area Community Garden.

Our callers August 28 are Expo 76's DAG JUHLIN and KENN GOODMAN. Games run 5:30-8 pm; kids welcome as long as they're with a responsible grownup.

For those who aren't aware, the Howard Area Community Garden is a nice piece of lands that locals grow plants, fruits, and vegetables aplenty to keep the local area beautiful. It's directly across from Triangle Park.

Buses Blocking Pedestrians

I love living in Rogers Park, there is beauty aplenty, bountiful history, creative art, and a lot of pedestrian friendly options. I'm very particular to walking, have been for years. I use to walk for miles to go to a park or visit a friend, my brother and I would call it an "adventure".

It's very difficult to have an adventure when a bus is blocking your path, slowing your progress, and making you miss the entire walking light, since walking around it is dangerous.

Buses are a great way to limit traffic density in a community, I wholeheartedly approve of having them, I just wish they'd pull up like their suppose to do.

The buses rarely ever pull up the entire distance necessary to avoid blocking the walking path across the street, and although it may seem silly to be upset, many people speed around the corner, and I'm worried someone will get hurt walking behind the bus and into a driver who isn't paying attention to the road or their speedometer.

So please be careful and approach cautiously, or just wait. Until their is a plausible solution, our adventures need to be curtailed.

Community Garden - Paschen Park

I received an e-mail from Sandy, the District Supervisor for the Chicago Park District about the garden spaces at Paschen Park needing to be maintained. As many are aware, I wasn't able to continue to work on Triangle Park's garden, so this new opportunity was quite invigorating.
My first trip to the garden was quite successful. Below are some photos of the progress that was made.

The above photos show the garden before we began working on it.

The below photos show the progress of the garden after day one.

Vista North Open Public Meeting

The other day, I received an e-mail that was read quickly and taken very seriously about a building group that was supposedly legally obligated to build a parking lot and, as of yet, has not. Other issues had been brought up, such as the building being dirty, broken glass littering common areas, etc. Our original post is here:

http://rp1000.blogspot.com/2013/08/vista-north-owners-group-blog.html

In the e-mail, I was told that there was a public meeting Thursday August 22nd at 6pm at Sol Cafe. Bill Morton, founder of Rogers Park in 1,000 Words, and I went there to see what was going on. To learn about the circumstances, and record, note, or document the entire meeting.

Below are the videos from the meeting:

We attended the meeting to hear both sides of the story so that everyone had a fair chance to explain the circumstances. We remained quiet so as to not sway the meeting and allow the individuals that had been "called out" have a fair chance to say what they felt was important about the situation and fairly cover the entire event.

Unfortunately, the meeting wasn't very productive. There was a lot of name calling and insults passed around. The community's concerns were overruled and turned into a joke.

What was worse, a reader of ours with the same name as the founder of Rogers Park in 1,000 Words was called and harassed about my posting a local neighbor's concerns. Unfortunately, we had to tell him to block the number.

Cheat Affordable Housing Development

Vista North Board to hold Public Open Board Meeting
August 22, 2013 6:00 pm CafĂ© Sol on Howard St.

The City Council of the City of Chicago approved the construction of the Parking Lot to be built at the west end of Triangle Park.  The address of the Parking Lot parcel is 1810 W. Juneway.

It was created by statute in 2002. It must be built by law. But it hasn't yet.

Here is a Link to the Journal of Proceedings, the official record of the City Council.

In 2011 a secret meeting was held in the offices of Alderman Moore attended by a board member who later went into foreclosure and had no interest in the lot. Mr. Paul Roldan, CEO of Hispanic Housing Development Corp., issued this commitment letter.

Mr. Roldan lies about conveyance. The city conveyed it for a dollar. He also lies about the funding. Hispanic received sufficient funds in Community Development Block Grants and other funding. They went over budget and cheated the Association. They then made the false claims in the commitment letter.

Despite repeated inquiries, the Vista North Board of Directors has refused to pursue this and has responded to no inquires.

The Board of Directors will be holding a public meeting at Cafe Sol on August 22, 2013 at 6:00 pm.
Vista North Owners Group members will be inviting community members and park council members to attend this open meeting held in a public place.

They will be asking questions of Mr. Erik Roldan, Mr. Ted Anderson (CEO of Leeda Services of Illinois,  Dr. Carolyn Montford, and Ms. Marci Portugal, our board members who take an active interest in the community and, we are sure, will be happy to update the entire community about this project which affects the entire neighborhood.

Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce Fresh Start Monday at Jarvis Plaza

The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce was founded in April of 2009 with one goal: to help struggling small businesses, and in fact, all businesses, to become successful. Chamber founder Bill Morton wasn't sure how exactly to do this, but he knew that he would do what it takes to succeed.

The Chamber struggled it's first two years, but in December of 2011, the Chamber and all of it's members started taking large strides to turn the Chamber into the vision they saw.

Chamber Founder and President Bill Morton came up with the idea of a neighborhood clean-up in support of the businesses. Eventually, the program that was created was Fresh Start Monday, an event that occurs the first and third Monday of the month from April through to November, weather pending.

The next Fresh Start Monday will be on August 19th, 2013 at Jarvis Plaza.
This is a public event from 6 pm - 7 pm. RSVP calls to (773) 850-0049 and walk-ups are OK. This is a free community event.
